Established in 1944, St Albans Choral Society is one of the leading amateur choirs in Hertfordshire, singing to a high standard in concert venues around St Albans and the surrounding area. It has approximately 100 members and performs at least four concerts a year, including one in St Albans Cathedral, with excellent professional soloists and orchestras.
The choir has built a strong reputation for presenting high quality and varied programmes of choral music, ranging from the classic choral repertoire to a wide range of more contemporary music, performing works by Cecilia McDowall (our current Composer in Association), James Francis Brown, Richard Blackford, Morten Lauridsen, Alexander L’Estrange, James MacMillan and Tarik O’Regan among others. The choir regularly commissions new works.
The Society prides itself on being an open and friendly choir, which achieves high standards of performance while remaining accessible to singers with a wide range of musical experience. It has a firmly rooted policy and practice of welcoming people with good voices but less musical experience, who are keen to learn and improve their musical ability.
Prospective new members are given a voice test rather than a more formal audition. They are expected to have a basic knowledge of musical notation as we work from music scores but are not required to be able to sight-read. The choir offers support to help develop musical ability including singing lessons, access to practice files and a termly optional ‘note-bashing’ rehearsal. St Albans Choral Society’s policy of accessibility differentiates it from some other local choirs.
The choir has a history of community engagement, particularly supporting local charities through fundraising and singing activities with schools and senior living/retirement communities.
We rehearse at Dagnall Street Baptist Church in St Albans on most Thursday evenings between September and early July, with rehearsals scheduled from 7:30pm to 9:30pm.
